Singita Boulders

As the small Caravan twin prop prepared to land at Singita, we spotted a large herd of breeding elephants just south of the landing strip. Less than 10 minutes later, after a chilled welcoming towel and ice cold cocktail, I found myself in the most sumptuous and sensual suite overlooking the river bed and veld beyond. Such chic and tasteful furnishings, with the most inventive use of authentic materials, and on top of that, every possible amenity imaginable. I particularly liked the heated plunge pool and private sun deck with outdoor shower overlooking the magnificent view; it was only moments before I was soaking in the rays and sights of the African bush. The suite’s mini bar magically always had a bucket of ice as well as a chilled bottle of white wine and tasty snacks ready and waiting. The result, a big dose of African Chic. I felt right at home!!

Our days began early with a game ride in an open Range Rover. The cold morning temperatures were remedied with hot water bottles, thermal ponchos and thick wool blankets. As the sun came up, and as the air warmed, we were peeling away the layers of clothing. Our morning coffee break, set in traditional colonial style on trestle tables, took away the last vestiges of chill before heading back to camp for a day of leisure, which could at our option, include a walking safari, a mountain bike safari, treatments in the spa, visiting a local village or chilling and tanning in the privacy of your own pool.

In the late afternoon and after a cup of tea and a bite to eat, we set out again on the evening drive to see more of Africa’s wildlife. The abundance of game in Singita is astonishing, and in our first two days we saw the Big Five – Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo. I have always said, it doesn’t matter who you are or how rich or how famous you are, when you’re faced with these animals in their natural surroundings, you are incredibly humbled and in awe of their majestic presence. Up close you feel the energy and power of their presence; from the roar of the lion to the sheer size of an elephant or the stealth of a hunting leopard, Mother Nature is truly astounding.

I spend my life eating and planning my next meal; fortunately I was blessed with the right metabolism. After our evening game ride, Marlon our game ranger, took us back to the camp, and while driving past the landing strip, I noticed over 90 lanterns, fires, hurricanes and candles burning. As we drew closer, I thought the lodge staff had planned a dinner for the whole camp, but on closer inspection I saw this entire dinner set-up was just for three of us; my friend traveling with me, Marlon and me. A fully stocked bar and a five-course gourmet meal cooked to order, was paired with the most extraordinary wines. The result, an absolute gastronomic highlight. I was blown away when the cigar and after-drinks tray arrived. Not a detail overlooked. Not a thing I would change. This was truly life as it should be.

After my time at Boulders, I understand why Singita has won Hotel of the Year internationally by Conde Naste Traveler more than any other hotel ever! Whether you’re planning an adventure journey, a milestone celebration, or your honeymoon, look no further. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

As always, more to come
